How to prune and update the money tree at home? Tips for gardeners and step-by-step procedure instructions
One of the most unpretentious house plants is Crassula or Crassula. It grows quickly, forgives irregular watering and dry air during the heating season. It looks solid - compact tree with a thick stem and glossy, coin-like leaves. Thanks to such leaflets, Crassula received the nickname “money tree” among the people. In this article we will tell you whether it is worth trimming a fat girl, what tools are needed for trimming and how the procedure is generally carried out, as well as what care the crassul requires after plucking and how to render it.
Is it possible to pinch a plant - its branches and leaves?
In nature, a fat woman grows up to one and a half meters in height, home specimens are usually much more compact. It develops well without special care, a necessary condition for the formation of a beautiful crown is a large amount of sunlight, so feel free to choose the lightest window sill for a fat woman.
For greater decorativeness, the crassula can be cut. Here, a huge scope opens up for imagination and experimentation, the crown of the rosula is very easily formed. Also, pruning contributes to the renewal of the fatty, if it is greatly stretched from a lack of light, and enhancing the growth of side shoots.
The formation of a bonsai tree from a money tree can be very exciting. Sometimes pruning of an overgrown tree is necessary to increase the stability of the plant: the root system of the crassula is small, a thick heavy crown can easily overturn the pot.
Do I need to cut a fat woman and when to do it right?
Important! The main pruning should be carried out in the spring (February-March), before the period of active growth begins. In summer, you can make corrective pruning (sometimes people say “pruning”) or pinch: remove asymmetrically elongated shoots and pinch growth points to stimulate the development of side shoots. With the reduction of daylight hours, the fat woman slows down its growth and enters the dormant period. Trimming it in the fall or winter, you can provoke the development of rot or the growth of thinned, weak shoots.
Trimming tools
For pruning, you need a garden pruner for large branches or a sharp knife, for pinching young shoots it is convenient to use manicure tongs. The best means of treating slices of a fat crust are crushed charcoal or ground cinnamon.
How to trim the rosula at home: step-by-step instructions
Before plucking leaves and pruning (some mistakenly say “stop” or “pinning”) the branches of an adult plant, it will be right to decide what shape you want to give it and outline the places for future slices. At this stage, it is important not to rush and “measure seven times”. If there are doubts about the place of the cut, you can first make a little pruning, see which buds will grow and cut the “money tree” again.
The easiest way to follow the following algorithm:
- Choose the strongest trunk, if you decide to form a tree with a stem or two or three trunks when forming a bush.
- Trim weak shoots at the bottom of the trunk and old leaves (you can leave it, over time, the crassula will dump them yourself).
- Cut thick hanging branches to a straight section or leave 1-2 live buds. New shoots will grow from sleeping buds located in the axils of the leaves. In the place of attachment of the leaves on the trunk of the crassula, transverse furrows pass, dividing the trunk into segments.
Pruning is carried out at a distance of about 1 cm above this furrow. The remaining “stump” will subsequently dry up and itself will disappear. If you cut the branch too close to the kidney, it will not wake up or instead of two symmetrical shoots, only one will grow.
- Trim small shoots growing inside the crown, large leaves that interfere with the development of left shoots.
- Pinch the growth point of the remaining branches onto one internode (pinch off the top pair of leaves together with part of the trunk to the next pair with nail scissors or directly with nails).
Large oozing sections should be blotted with a dry cloth or napkin, then sprinkled with crushed charcoal or cinnamon to prevent rotting of the trunk. In most cases, the cut of the crassula dries and tightens on its own.
Important! With deep pruning with the removal of most of the crown, it will not be superfluous to leave at least a pair of leaflets on thick branches so that the plant can continue photosynthesis through them. In the future, when new shoots appear, these leaves can be pruned.Photo

Pinch Care
Do not immediately after cutting to sharply change the conditions of detention. It is best to put the flower in its original place before the emergence of new shoots. The more dramatic the pruning, the more careful you need to be with watering in the coming months. Having lost a large mass of leaves, in which the fat woman “lays” water in reserve, the plant can rot. If in doubt, whether or not you need to water the fat girl, it is better not to water it.
The most understandable landmark is the state of the leaves. If they are firm and hard to the touch, watering can be delayed. With a lack of moisture, the leaves become paler, thinner and softer.
Crassula is not a whimsical flower at all and its content is even for beginner gardeners. The formation of the crown of Crassula can be a fascinating activity for many years.
