Oak furniture panels, selection tips
In the process of manufacturing furniture products, various wood materials are used - particleboard, MDF boards, solid wood, plywood. The oak furniture board, obtained from natural wood using modern technology for gluing lamellas, is widely used. In terms of density, the oak shield is second only to ash. Due to the combination of affordability and high strength, the material is used to make premium quality furniture.
Advantages and disadvantages
The furniture board is made of individual lamellas that undergo heat treatment beforehand. The natural oak mass is spread on the planks on machines, carefully dried to remove moisture, and glued together with environmentally friendly compounds. Spikes are cut on calibrated lamellas for durable splicing of parts. Advantages of oak furniture board:
- resistance to mechanical stress;
- high density, strength, wear resistance;
- long service life and environmental friendliness;
- universality of use in production;
- lack of shrinkage, preservation of color and shape;
- treatment with antiseptics, flame retardants;
- lack of toxic substances;
- uniformity of coverage and clarity of dimensions;
- beautiful texture with a unique pattern;
- specific gravity lower than that of solid wood;
- lack of internal tension.
The advantages of an oak shield are obvious - quality, strength, durability plus aesthetic appeal. The disadvantages of the product include a slight shrinkage of the material in the manufacture of dimensional objects (beds, cabinets), a higher cost than MDF and chipboard.
Oak furniture panels in the production process are connected by splicing lamellas in width, for example, oak furniture board is whole-lamellar or in length and width. Products are assigned class A - wood without knots, chips, class B - material with minor defects, class C - the picture is not printed on the canvas, knots may be present.
Basic rules for material selection
Many companies are engaged in the manufacture of oak furniture panels, so the range is quite wide. So that the product does not lose shape as a result of poor-quality drying of wood, products of well-known manufacturers should be selected. Shields are very popular, for the manufacture of which German-made adhesives are used - non-toxic, provide a strong connection of parts. The parameters that should be relied on when visually choosing oak panels are shown in the table.
Evaluation criterion | Extra class | Class A | Class B | Class C |
Rot, Wormhole, Mold | No | No | No | No |
Healthy twigs | No | No more than two per sq m shield | No more than three per sq m shield | there is |
Uneven wood coloring | Allowed | Allowed | Allowed | Allowed |
Scratches and dents | No | No | there is | there is |

Choosing a furniture panel from oak, you should carefully consider it. If defects are found on a product that is positioned as high-quality material of a class extra or class A, the shield does not meet the manufacturer's specifications. It is necessary to pay attention to the class on both sides of the plate - there are options A / A, B / B, A / B.
When choosing, the direction of cutting the lamellas matters. The most resistant to stress are the lamellas of the radial cut.
A beautiful pattern is obtained by connecting the tangential cut lamellae. Additional options are as follows:
- ability to withstand loads. Oak is one of the most durable types of wood. With the proper processing of lamellas, products serve for decades;
- use in rooms with high humidity. Take into account that when the indicator changes by 1 percent, oak absorbs moisture at a low speed. The optimal indicator is 8 percent;
- texture, pattern, the presence of tinting. The aesthetic attractiveness of the material is determined depending on the use of the shield - furniture, stairs, steps.
There is no fundamental difference in quality between a solid-plate and a spliced shield. But from an aesthetic point of view, the whole-lamellar oak furniture panel looks more attractive, creates a visual effect of solid wood. It is difficult to choose lamellas, so the material is more expensive than spliced.
Shield Use Area
Due to its high strength and low moisture absorption rate, an oak furniture board is used as a finishing material and is used for the manufacture of wooden structures and furniture. What is the material suitable for:
- manufacture of countertops - panel oak panels have a thickness of 10 to 50 mm. Unlike plastic, they do not have toxicity, and in comparison with stone they have a lower specific gravity;
- production of cabinet furniture - panels are suitable for the manufacture of beds, wardrobes, work and writing tables, dining groups, kitchen and bedroom sets, wardrobes;
- manufacturing window sills - it’s difficult to organically fit plastic window sills into some interior styles. It is important to install oak structures with wooden windows;
- production of interior and exterior doors. The oak massif is inferior in density to few species, which gives the shields high strength - the appearance of the door is difficult to distinguish from solid wood;
- manufacturing steps and stairs. In country houses, stairs occupy a central place in the interior. The steps from the oak shield look beautiful in the interior;
- interior decoration - with a furniture board you can sheathe walls and ceilings. Wood fills the room with a pleasant aroma, allows you to create a cozy atmosphere.
There is an opinion that the boards are made from the waste of the woodworking industry. This is fundamentally wrong - for the production of slabs use a selective edged board, cut into individual lamellas. In appearance, the shield resembles a neatly laid parquet, which gives the products a decorative value.
Main characteristics
According to technical and operational characteristics, an oak furniture board can be compared with ash, beech - high hardness, strength and density of the material plus a beautiful pattern and color of wood. Key product features:
- the moisture content of heat-treated wood is 6-8% +/- 2%;
- oak hardness - is estimated according to the Brinnel table and is 3.7 kg per sq mm;
- wood density - 0.9 kg / sq m. The indicator affects hygroscopicity (moisture absorption) and material strength;
- grinding quality of the processed cloth. The best indicator is granularity in the range of 80-120 units;
- lamella connection - splicing in width and length, solid gluing in width;
- composition used for gluing wood. High performance has glue made in Germany;
- width, length of lamellas in the canvas, dimensions of the canvas. There are standard sizes that manufacturers adhere to.
Finished products may vary in color, because different types of oak are used for their manufacture. To improve the decorative characteristics of products, apply the technology of tinting, tinting. Masters recommend using a medium-sized oak furniture board in the work - it does not “twist” during the assembly process. The material must be kept indoors for two weeks, and then proceed to work.
How to care for products
The oak shield is used for the manufacture of furniture, interior elements, window sills and doors, steps and stairs. To maintain the attractiveness of wood, the products must be properly looked after:
- It is recommended to avoid direct contact of moisture and oak leaf. Water may interfere with the lamella bond strength;
- if the furniture board is used for steps, they must be varnished to prevent abrasion;
- When caring for furniture, do not use abrasive detergents. It is recommended to wipe the surface with a soft cloth;
- Do not expose products and structures to sudden changes in temperature and humidity;
- when carrying out painting and plastering work in the house, the furniture is sealed with a protective film;
- the working surfaces of the products (countertops, steps) are coated with matt varnish.
If the shield is used in a production environment, the material must be properly stored. Oak boards are laid in horizontal bundles in dry rooms with a stable temperature (18-22 ° C) and humidity (50-60%). Packs of material are closed from direct exposure to sunlight. Protective plates or beams are placed under the bottom shield.
Oak furniture panel surpasses many wood products in terms of decorative and technical characteristics. The versatility of use and the beautiful texture of natural oak put the product out of competition in the market of wooden materials.
